Responsibilities

Food safety consultants have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

  • Developing standards for food safety and sanitation procedures in restaurants, food production facilities, supermarkets, and other food service establishments
  • Developing plans for food safety management procedures, including training employees on food safety principles and practices
  • Performing food safety inspections in restaurants, grocery stores, or other facilities where food may be prepared or sold
  • Developing plans for foodborne illness prevention programs, including training employees on food safety principles and procedures
  • Monitoring food safety conditions in restaurants, grocery stores, schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, hospitals, or other facilities where food is prepared or served
  • Consulting with clients on issues such as how to create a safe environment in food service establishments, how to prevent foodborne illnesses in high risk populations, and how to manage a food recall or disease outbreak
  • Preparing reports on findings and recommendations regarding food safety issues
  • Conducting training sessions on food safety topics for staff members, including managers, chefs, bartenders, waiters or waitresses, dishwashers, kitchen staff, and dining room staff
  • Conducting research on food safety topics to identify emerging issues and create new protocols for safe food handling practices

Job Description

Food safety consultants are experts in the field of food safety. They work with restaurants, grocery stores, farms, and other food-related businesses to ensure that they’re following all applicable laws and regulations.

They may also provide advice on how these businesses can improve their practices to better protect consumers from foodborne illnesses.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science, microbiology, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience working in the food industry
  • 3+ years of experience in a food safety role
  • Working knowledge of HACCP principles
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in food science, microbiology, or related field
  • Certification from a recognized food safety organization, such as ServSafe
  • Experience developing and implementing food safety programs
  • Experience auditing food safety systems
  • Familiarity with international food safety standards, such as BRC, IFS, SQF, etc.
